Best of luck to all members today with 2 runners at Ayr; Loosed Ends and Station Closed!
After a quiet week we are looking forward to having runners this weekend at Punchestown and Fairyhouse! We will also have runners travelling to Ayr over the weekend for racing on Monday/Tuesday.
A couple of possible runners for the Club this weekend – email regarding declarations to follow after 10am.
2016 Gold Cup winner Don Cossack has been retired from racing and will enjoy a happy retirement at Gigginstown House Stud.
Michael O’Leary said:
“Anita, Eddie and I would like to sincerely thank Gordon, Karen, Louise and all the team at Cullentra House for the outstanding job they did in managing Don Cossack’s career, to ultimately win the 2016 Cheltenham Gold Cup. Gordon left no stone unturned to help Don Cossack return to defend his title but alas it is not to be. At the age of 10 we are all agreed that the best thing for “the Don” is a well-earned and very well pampered retirement in Gigginstown.”
10 entries between 3 races made for the Cheltenham Festival 2017, just 61 days to go! We now have Cheltenham entries every Monday for the next month or so. We also have the Grand National entries closing at the end of the month so we really need to be on the ball and keep up with all the stages; the entries, scratching’s, confirmations and declarations!
The chill in setting in with snow forecast this week! Another day of catching up with admin in the office, we made more than 40 entries yesterday – including entries for 3 Cheltenham Festival races!
8 runners at Cork today;
First up we have VEINARD in the Rated Novice Hurdle, fantastic run from him last time out at Leopardstown. He should handle todays ground after some decent runs in similar conditions. Jack Kennedy rides.
3 in the Maiden Hurdle: CANELIE – Mark Walsh, CHESAPEAKE – Keith Donoghue & HARDLINE – Jack Kennedy. Canelie and Hardline have the upper hand of our 3 – they face a large field of 20 runners.
OPTIMISED is next in the 3m Maiden Hurdle, another big field with 19 competitors and although yet to break his duck he’s in good fettle at home and looks great.
HIGH EXPECTATIONS (pictured) contests the Handicap Hurdle, we hope his last run was a one off and that he can regain some of his better form. Jack Kennedy rides.
GENERAL PRINCIPLE takes on the Beginners Chase with Jack Kennedy in the saddle, a big horse that improves for his runs he should relish todays ground. Also in this we have SQUOUATEUR partnered by Mark Walsh, he has been somewhat out of sorts this season so we hope he can get back to his best.
Dawerann (above) enjoying the start of his 3 week break! Station Closed schooled yesterday morning, Gordon was delighted with her – she jumped great and seems to be really well in herself. Loose Ends is back in full work now after a couple of easy days, she handled her first run for us really well and we are very happy with her.
Just the 2 runners this evening at Dundalk; ZANJABEEL (pictured)- S.P Davis who was narrowly beaten on his last 2 starts here and WALKABOUT – D.W O’Connor who although didn’t set the world alight on his latest was returning from a short break so we hope he will have come on for the run.

It’s hard to believe the first Cheltenham entries are nearly upon us, there are 3 races closing in Ireland this coming Monday; The Queen Mother Chase, The Ryanair Chase and of course The Gold Cup!
Dawerann is thoroughly enjoying the first few days of his 3 week break, he has gone to Lambertstown Stud just down the road as they have lots of grass and a change of scenery is always good, Lambertstown is owned by Emily MacMahon who works in the yard so she knows him well – it’s very well deserved after 6 runs in quick succession and we think he’ll improve for the time off. Loose Ends and Station Closed are both working away well, Loose Ends won’t do too much fast work too soon after her run but Station Closed is now in full training. We’ll have some updated pictures for you all this afternoon!
2 runners this evening at Wolverhampton; CAPTAIN K – Dougie Costello and SIEGE OF BOSTON – Timmy Murphy.
